Systems & Smiles uses Jamf to securely set up, manage and support company-owned Apple devices, including Mac, iPhone, iPad and Apple TV.
Jamf gives us the tools to apply approved settings, provide apps, keep devices secure and help when something goes wrong. It also gives us limited technical information about each device.
We use Jamf to look after devices, not to watch the people using them.
What we use Jamf for
Depending on the device and your company’s requirements, we use Jamf to:
- Configure security and device settings
- Install and update approved applications
- Provide apps and resources through Self Service
- Apply Wi-Fi, email, VPN and account settings
- Keep operating systems and security controls up to date
- Check that devices meet agreed security requirements
- Diagnose technical problems
- Configure shared devices, meeting-room equipment and Apple TVs
- Lock or erase a company device if it is lost or stolen
- Remove company settings and information when a device is returned or replaced
Some essential settings and applications may be installed automatically. This helps us provide a consistent, secure and supported experience from the moment the device is first switched on.
What we can see
Jamf provides us with technical information needed to manage and support company devices.
Depending on whether you use a Mac, iPhone, iPad or Apple TV, this may include:
- Device model, name and serial number
- Operating system version
- Available storage
- Encryption and security status
- Installed applications and application versions
- Whether required settings are in place
- Whether the device has recently connected to Jamf
- Technical information needed to diagnose faults
Access to this information is restricted to authorised Systems & Smiles team members who need it to manage or support the device.
What we cannot see through Jamf
Jamf does not ordinarily give us access to the contents of:
- Text messages, iMessages or WhatsApp conversations
- Personal email messages
- Photos and videos
- Phone calls or call audio
- Passwords
- Documents or data held inside personal applications
- The device’s camera or microphone
- Your live screen
- A continuous history of your location
- Your general web-browsing history
We do not use Jamf to monitor your day-to-day activity.
Your company may use other business or security services that keep their own records. For example, company email, telephone and internet-security systems may record activity associated with those services. This page specifically explains what Systems & Smiles can do through Jamf device management.
Installing apps on Mac, iPhone and iPad
The Self Service app gives you access to applications and resources approved by your company.
Open Self Service on your Mac, iPhone or iPad, find the application you need and select the option to install it.
If an app is not listed, contact Systems & Smiles. We can review the request with your company and add it to Self Service where appropriate. This is more secure and efficient than arranging individual installations.
Your company may also allow access to Apple’s App Store. The available options will depend on its policies and how the device has been configured.
Installing apps on Apple TV
Apps and settings for managed Apple TVs are normally installed remotely by Systems & Smiles.
If an app or configuration is needed for a meeting room, display or shared Apple TV, contact us through your usual IT support channel.
If your device is lost or stolen
Report a lost or stolen company Mac, iPhone or iPad to your company and Systems & Smiles as soon as possible.
Depending on the device and circumstances, we may be able to:
- Lock the device
- Display return instructions
- Place an iPhone or iPad into Managed Lost Mode
- Protect or remove company information
- Remotely erase the device
We will only take actions appropriate to the situation and your company’s instructions.
Location and Managed Lost Mode
Jamf does not provide us with continuous location tracking as part of normal device management.
We can request the location of a supervised company iPhone or iPad only after deliberately placing it into Managed Lost Mode, for example, after the device has been reported missing.
Managed Lost Mode locks the device and displays a message on its screen. It is not silent or invisible background tracking.
We only use this capability to help locate or protect a missing company device. This location capability does not apply to Mac or Apple TV through Jamf.
Company devices and personal use
Company-owned devices remain the property of your company and should be used in accordance with its acceptable-use, security and privacy policies.
Your company decides which management controls are required. Systems & Smiles configures and operates those controls to provide secure, reliable support while collecting only the technical information needed to do that job.
Questions
For questions about your company’s privacy or acceptable-use policies, contact your company’s privacy or data-protection representative.
For technical questions about Jamf, Self Service or your managed Apple device, contact Systems & Smiles through your usual IT support channel.
